Pharmaceutical Solutions:

If surgery is not for you, there are various other options, including medications which can help stop hair loss, and in some cases, even re-start hair growth in balding areas.

Propecia (Finasteride)

Finasteride, sold commercially under the brand name Propecia, is a pharmaceutical medication taken in pill form. It has been on the market for the treatment of hair loss since 1998.

How it works:

By reducing DHT production, Propecia is able to slow the loss of hair, and for some, restart hair growth.

Results:

Patients have reported an increase in hair density along the hair line and on the top of the head. Generally, after two years of treatment, newly grown hair presents with a thicker shaft.

Rogaine (Minoxidil)

Minoxidil, sold commercially under the name Rogaine, may slow hair loss, especially among women. This spray will help you maintain the hair you have and prevent future loss.

How it works:

Rogaine revitalizes aging hair follicles. Although scientists are still unclear as to exactly how Rogaine works, it is known that it increases blood flow to balding areas of the scalp. Some hypothesize that this treatment works by opening potassium channels in the follicle cells and that it is these potassium channels that regulate the growth of hair.

Results:

Clinical studies have shown Rogaine to be effective at slowing the advancement of hair loss. Some report a regrowth of hair in balding areas.
Rogaine is most effective among younger men, between the ages of 18 and 31, and individuals in whom baldness focuses in the central portion of the scalp. It has also proven to be effective among women.

Please note that if you choose to combat hair loss using a pharmaceutical solution, medications must continue to be administered to maintain results.
